Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing your web presence so that AI assistants, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, cite and recommend your brand when someone asks them a question. Where traditional SEO competes for a ranked link, GEO competes to be the answer itself.

The shift matters because user behaviour has already changed. Roughly 60% of Google searches now end without a click, and over 800 million people use ChatGPT every week, many of them asking what to buy and who to trust. If the AI's answer doesn't name you, the ranking underneath it barely matters.

GEO vs SEO, concretely

SEO and GEO are not the same discipline wearing different clothes. They optimize for different mechanisms:

  • SEO rewards keywords, backlinks, and page authority to win a position in a list of links.
  • GEO rewards specific, verifiable, well-structured content that an AI retriever chooses to quote when it generates an answer.

An AI assistant performs retrieval, then quotes the most specific and verifiable passage among its candidates. A vague marketing line gets skipped every time. A concrete passage that names the company, a founding year, a hard number, and a cited source gets quoted instead.

The signals that actually move GEO

  1. Structured data (Schema.org JSON-LD). Organization, Product, FAQPage, and Article markup tell AI systems exactly what you are, unambiguously.
  2. llms.txt. A machine-readable index at the root of your domain that gives crawlers a clean map of your site and your key facts.
  3. Citation-worthy content. Fact-dense prose with real numbers, named entities, dates, and specifications, the opposite of marketing fluff.
  4. Entity consistency. Your brand name, identifiers, and relationships expressed the same way across every page, so the AI builds one coherent picture.

How long does it take?

Technical signals like structured data are picked up by Google within days to weeks. AI assistants re-crawl on their own schedules, so meaningful changes in how they describe your brand typically appear within two to eight weeks of deployment.

GEO is necessary but not sufficient on its own, it removes the technical reason an AI would skip you. Pairing it with genuine authority (mentions, citations, a real track record) is what gets you recommended consistently.
