llms.txt is a Markdown file placed at the root of your domain (for example, https://yourbrand.com/llms.txt) that gives AI crawlers a clean, structured summary of your site, what your business is, what you offer, and which pages matter. Think of it as robots.txt for meaning instead of access.

Most brands don't have one. That's exactly why publishing a good one is one of the fastest GEO wins available.

Why it works

AI retrievers weight the opening of a document heavily. A well-written llms.txt puts your most quotable facts, who you are, where you're based, what you sell, your differentiators, in the first few hundred tokens, in plain language a model can lift directly into an answer.

It also removes ambiguity. If your site is a single-page app, has thin navigation, or buries key facts in images, llms.txt is a reliable fallback that states the truth clearly.

What goes in it

A strong llms.txt follows a simple structure:

  • An H1 with your brand name, followed by a blockquote summary packed with your key entity facts.
  • A short paragraph with location, contact, and founding context.
  • A services or products section listing what you offer, specifically.
  • A pages index with one-line descriptions and URLs.
  • An FAQ section, the highest-value block, because it pre-answers the exact questions buyers ask AI assistants.

A note on what it can't do

llms.txt is not a magic ranking switch. It's a clarity signal. It makes you legible to AI systems so they can cite you accurately, but it doesn't manufacture authority. Pair it with structured data and genuine, fact-dense content for the full effect.

If you only do one technical GEO thing this month, publish a real llms.txt. It takes an afternoon and removes a whole category of reasons an AI would describe you wrong, or not at all.
